The weather held for the start of Woody's captain's weekend and 130 golfers took part in Stableford competition. The day was won by Mick Garfield with 42 points, Neil Warne was second with 40 on count back from Glen Wilshire who was 3rd and Richard Body 4th. All win fourballs at Castle Combe, St Pierre, Salisbury and the Isle of Wedmore GC respectively.
Chris Chapman was nearest the line and Sean Wiles -Richards nearest the pin in 2 on 21st. Neil Coates won nearest the pin on 24th. Sue Cooper won best lady with 34 points.
Everybody enjoyed the refreshments at the halfway house and a the most notable performance of the day was Ray Evans who scored 10 points on the front nine but 27points on the back after a can of Black Rat cider at the turn! Perhaps we should all try that before our rounds.
The weather wasn't quite so good for the fun day Bowmaker on the Sunday but 11 teams showed true grit by turning up in Hawaiian fancy dress for a round of golf in some pretty miserable drizzle. The day was won by Will and Peter Doust and Steve and Joe Retford with a magnificent 92 points six points ahead of second place Lee Probert and Paul, Rhys and Myles Edwards who pipped Mark and Liz Hobbs and Dom and Judy Mussell on count-back.
Nearest the pin was won by Sarah Cheverton. Best fancy dress was won by Mel Probert, Budgie Nock, Katie Dove-Medows and Tracy Edwards.
Saturday evening was enjoyed by almost a 100 members who were treated to a Pimms reception followed by an excellent meal. Comedian Denny Waters entertained everybody with his Livverpuddlian wit and the evening ended with a short auction which raised a further £600 towards the captains chosen charity The Bath and District MS Society.
In all the weekend raised a total of £3450 for the charity and Ian would like to thank all the members who took part in the weekend for the generosity.
He would also like to thank sponsors Neil Hooper from Church Farm Meats, Twerton Bakery and Cascade Drinks, Marion James and Cumberwell Cottages, Neil Barnes from Tahi-tees.co.uk together with the many people who donated prizes for the day.
He also thanked Ali James who has been a tremendous support in the weeks before the event and all the staff in the Proshop, behind reception, in the kitchen and behind the bar as well as Martin Cooper and the other helpers at the halfway house.
Ian Wood, Club Captain.
West Region Player's Championships Pro-Am!
Another great Pro-Am was supported by the members here on Monday with over 40 teams taking part in the Cumberwell Park West Region Championships Pro-Am, supported by Lansdown Mazda.
The amateurs were treated to some fantastic scores by some top class professionals with 16 players under par in what proved to be tricky conditions with plenty of wind and rain about! Topping the leader board was Scott Drummond (winner of the Volvo PGA Championships at Wentworth in 2004), Phillip Price (4 time European tour Winner and Ryder Cup player in 2002) and with an unbelievable 62 was Dave Dixon also a winner on the European tour!! What do they say about the cream??
