Liz Hobbs

As some of you may be aware, sadly we lost Liz Hobbs to cancer two weeks ago. Many of you would have known Liz as a previous Lady Captain, a Cumberwell Park starter, a very active member of the ladies section and a keen golfer representing the ladies first team. In memory of Liz, members of the ladies section are doing a sponsored 10K walk for Dorothy House dressed as superheroes!

Competition news

The inaugural Par 3 Championships brings in the crowds...

Bank holiday Monday saw us host the first Par 3 Championships and we had over 55 playing from all sections. It was great to see so many women, seniors, juniors and men take part and it shows that it’s a great course where everyone can take part together. No doubt the event will grow each year as the course continues to impress.

Winning the Men’s section was Steve Cooper with 20 points, beating Mark Symonds, Nick Korynevsky and Simon Evans by one point. Winner of the ladies section was Fiona Thomas with 17 points. The junior winner was Callum Bygrave with 18 points and the winner of the seniors section was Alan Hinds with 16 points.

Thanks for everyone who took part, look forward to seeing how the event grows.

Joe wins Under 18’s West of England in style

Cumberwell Park’s Joe Retford continued his Sunday Club Champs form by winning the Under 18’s West of England Champs at Burnham & Berrow last week.

The 18 year old (who achieved amazing A level results a couple of weeks ago) blitz the field with a final round 66 (-6) to win by a single shot, really showing his class. Joe now moves to plus 3 handicap and a significant win for him as it now gets him a world amateur ranking. Congratulations Joe, hard work pays off!

Laura Curtis takes County Coronation Medal

15 year old Laura Curtis won the Wiltshire County Coronation Cup with a gross 1 over par 74 at Ogbourne Downs GC on Sunday. Qualifying in an event here at Cumberwell, Laura did enough to win the gross and the nett competitions. Dropping her handicap to 4.7, Laura is finishing the season with some great scores. Well done Laura!!

Race to the medallist getting close!

With just two medals to go, the race to the medallist is being fiercely contested with only 29 points separating the top 3 players. It is all to play for before the final. The final remaining medals are to be held on Sunday 8th September and Saturday 21st September. Can you make the top 50?

Cumberwell Park 25th Anniversary fun!

The 25th Anniversary Stableford takes place on Saturday 14th September, played on the Red & Yellow course and the Blue & Orange. FREE entry and open to all members of all sections with a competition handicap. Tee times are being booked through us in the Proshop, so if you wish to play, please give us a call on 01225 862332. It will be a busy one, so don’t delay! Tee times are being booked between 7am and 12pm and to maximise entrants, we can help by pairing up one’s and two's.

The John James Memorial Trophy is also played on the same weekend on Sunday 15th September. Teams of four will play a best 2 from 4 bowmaker. It's slightly different from previous years, where teams can be made up from players from any section, so it's open to all combinations of players. Times are available between 9am and 1pm. Book your own or team slot on intelligent golf. There will be no green fees payable for this event.

As part of the celebrations, the golf club are running a free BBQ and Hog Roast all weekend, so even more reason to join in!

Flop shot required

Type ‘flop shot’ into Google and Phil Mickelson’s name will be at the top of the search. The five-time Major champion is the go-to guy when it comes to shots around the green, especially the flop shot. So, if you want to follow suit and impress your golfing partners, here’s our guide to this magical shot.

Technique

The first thing you must do is accelerate through the ball and stay aggressive. It's when we get a little scared or take our eye off the ball that things start to go wrong, all of which we can explain during a short game lesson.

Wedge

Your wedge plays a vital role with worn grooves and incorrect bounce leaving you at risk of a bladed shot through the green. Nightmare!

Spotlight | Titleist TS hybrids

TS2 or TS3?

You will probably recognise these names from the new drivers that Titleist released last year. Well, they've carried on their pursuit of speed and have conjured up these two beauties as a result.

Both offer extreme yet controllable distances, along with more forgiveness when compared to previous Titleist hybrids.

The TS2 has a larger head and is arguably easier to hit, whilst the TS3 comes with the SureFit CG for ball flight control.
