The course fights back in tough Club Championships… It seems that the weather gods were on our side this year, and although it was windy with a few showers, most of the rain came on Friday but the green keepers did a great job in getting the course into good shape. The greens were fantastic and very quick, no doubt this caught quite a few people out! With a breeze blowing all weekend and the course playing long, the scoring was very tough with only 8 scores out of 226 returned cards under handicap and only two people finishing under their handicap after the two rounds. Matt Banahan returned scores of 76 and 77 and playing off 6, gave him a nett total of 1 under par and became the winner of the Adam Jack trophy. The field was very strong this year with seven players off plus figures, and another 20 players with a handicap of 5 or better. The gross competition was fierce, with first round leader Jamie Li posting a -3 (68) and Cumberwell’s own Ali James posting a -1(70), along with a handful of players within touching distance going into the second round.

After a first round 76 (+5) Joe Retford rocketed up the leaderboard with a second round 65 (-6)!! Finishing in an eventual tie for second with Ali James for a total of 141 (-1). Jamie Li backed up his first round with another fantastic score of 69 (-2) to finish 4 shots clear on a total of 137 (-5). Massive congratulations to Jamie who is flying straight back out to college in Florida to complete his senior year. Exciting times ahead for Jamie, wishing you best of luck, a bright future ahead for sure. Thank you to all players who took part, it was another fantastic event. We hope you all enjoyed the challenge, the course was in absolutely fantastic condition, I’m sure you will all agree? A big thank you to Matt James and his team, the greens were the fastest all year!! For a full list of results, please visit cumberwell.intelligentgolf.co.uk.
