Captain’s Weekend
Last weekends Captain’s weekend events were as popular as ever and a great success overall. Saturday was the individual stableford for the Captain’s Trophy with 115 entries from all sections of the club. Despite the weather being unkind and having to suspend play for 45 minutes due to thunder and lighting, the competition did re-start and was concluded successfully.
There were some excellent scores – Peter Doust and Simon Parker tied with 41 points resulting with Peter winning in a count-back for the best individual men’s score. The best lady and overall trophy winner was Mel Probert with a stunning 42 points – well done Mel. Seven other winners won on course prizes of champagne and golf balls for nearest the pin and nearest the line – congratulations to all winners.
Back on the calendar on Saturday evening after a gap of two years was the Captain's dinner, with 70 guests enjoying pre-dinner pimms in the garden, a 3-course dinner, raffle, charity auction and disco. I am pleased to say that during the day everyone gave generously and the raffle raised over £700 and the range of terrific auction prizes raised over £1400 and in total over the whole weekend, with all of your terrific support we raised over £2600. Thank you all very much indeed. With better weather on Sunday 13 teams entered the team bowmaker event – the winning team, with a magnificent score of 95 points off ¾ handicap was Katie Dove-Meadows, Linda Nock, Fiona Thomas and Mel Probert. Mel Probert was a three-time winner, wining the best ladies score with 32 points.
The weekend was a great success in all respects – golfing, enjoyment, good company, good food and being able to raise a fantastic sum of money for two wonderful charities – RUH, Cancer Care Centre and Breast Cancer Campaign. I would like to extend a huge thank all those who helped make the weekend the success it was – Ali and Becky in the office, Ben and Alex in the pro’s shop, without who we couldn’t run these things, all the catering staff, everyone who made copious amounts of delicious cakes and biscuits (Sue Roberts, Cathy Cooper, Sue Warren, Sue Pierce, Judith May, Gill Guilfoyle and of course my wife Sue) to keep everyone well fuelled at half-way (especially Gary Standen who sampled most of the 12 different cakes during the rain break) Pat Traves and Vince Pidgely, Steve Roberts, Mark and Liz Hobbs for their help and support on both days – thank you all most sincerely.
A quick reminder about our next fund raising effort coming up shortly.
Mark Hobbs, Suz Carten and I will be cycling 90 miles around 9 Wiltshire Golf clubs, playing a single hole at each club followed by another 9 holes at Cumberwell to finish. We estimate this will take about 11-12 hours and we would welcome anyone to meet us when we finish at approx. 7.30pm on 21st July to join us in the clubhouse. Of course you can also sponsor us on the JustGiving website link below.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer’s golf. Read more on my next Captain’s blog coming shortly.

Ian Wood is jumping out of a plane!!
Ian is taking part in a sky dive from 15,000 feet over Salisbury in Wiltshire next Saturday 5th July and is hoping you may see fit to sponsor him on his JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/ian-wood14.
He is raising money for the MS Society locally and the ultimate aim is to replace the aging minibus with one that isn't quite so old but is capable of getting wheelchair users to physiotherapy and exercise sessions safely.
