Jess Hays wins the junior club championships

Last weekend we held the Junior Club Championships and had some new names on the trophy. Jess Hays who recently joined took home the gross championship with rounds of 76 & 81. The winner of the nett club championships was Jake Meredith who scored rounds of nett 72 & 64!

Well played both!

Medallist so far…

A fast two medals from Tom Holtby has seen his handicap drop from 19 to 12 in three weeks and he currently leads the Race to the Medallist on 600 points. We are now eight medals in and with 4 left, make sure you get in as many as possible to push your way into the Top 50!!

The final event is on 14th October.

Best of luck to Canter this week!

Cumberwell Park touring professional tees it up with the a start this week at Birkdale and he’s already getting accustomed to mixing with the big boys.

Sharing a house with Major winners Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, he has an opportunity to see how the best player in the world goes about his business! He started the week with practice rounds with Spieth and Casey, we can’t wait to see how he gets on in the ultimate test of golf.

No doubt you will all be following!

Members ‘adopt a green’ scheme

The club has put in place a simple scheme to help reduce the amount of pitch marks left unrepaired on the greens which we are hoping will see a huge reduction of pitch marks on the putting surfaces.

Each member will be allocated a hole on each of the five nines and we ask that on ‘your’ green when playing we would be grateful if you could repair an extra 2/3 pitch marks paying special attention to any par 3’s you may be allotted.

Summer holiday junior fun days

We have set four dates in the Summer Holidays for kids golf coaching. Each day starts runs between 10am and 3pm and costs £27.50 including lunch and some time on the golf course in the afternoon:

It's not just about hitting the green…

If you really want to lower your scores this year it's important that you don’t just settle for hitting the green, but instead focus on hitting the right part to avoid three-putt territory. This will be a key consideration for the pros at Royal Birkdale this week, just take the 17th green for example:

THREE-PUTT TERRITORY

While aiming for the middle of the green is usually a safe bet, if the flag is on a tier an approach to the wrong level (red zone above) will often lead to a three putt.

TRUST YOUR CLUBS

Having faith in your clubs and knowing their yardages allows you to be confident and aggressive when you need to go at a flag that is hidden by a hazard or tier (green zone above).

Playing a new course isn't easy

A lot of golfers get excited about going to play at new courses - whether that's in club matches, invitation days or just a game with friends - but usually they go ill-prepared and find themselves struggling when it comes to judging new holes and hidden hazards. Take the below illustration for example:

A DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE (DMD) CAN HELP

When you tackle a new course it can be very tough to gauge how far you have to hazards and to greens that sit above or below the fairway, which is why it's often difficult to play to your handicap.

However, with a GPS golf watch or handheld device, you have the tools to identify trouble off the tee and around the green before it's too late.

Some of these devices can also monitor your golf statistics and be used off the course to track runs and bike rides, adding great all-round value.
